Before the C64 I had a ZX81, that was the bomb
this interview courtesy of enooze
When/where/why did you get started?
Musically: Bontempi 1977, Casio 1982 etc etc. First record was on DAP in 1995,
some nice Dutch people who also put out all the Shiver stuff (if you don't know
it, you should).Put my phone number on the label and Grant rang me up from Rephlex
to offer encouragement. I was a very big fan of Rephlex and asked him to put
out a record. We talked, it took time...
Whats the most important thing for aspiring pro artists to remember?
I've no idea. I consider myself a rank amateur compared to producers like, for
example, Trevor Horn. Try and make good music?
Whats on your playlist right now?
When I DJ I largely play fast electro, Detroit Ghetto stuff, some technoey housey
stuff, etc etc. On the other hand, yesterday I listened to Charlie and Inez
Foxx and Gil Scott Heron... and I still dig all the old school electro shit,
Hip hop, Chicago & Detroit...
What does the future look like for DMX krew and EDMX?
Bleak. ... seriously, I hope I can get a good place to live and set up my equipment
properly and make some more music which I consider to be as good as what I've
done before. I'm really proud of We Are DMX, nothing seems to be coming out
like that, but then I'm in a tiny room with only half my equipment. It's frustrating.
It's really hard to sell records these days anyhow, Breakin'-wise things are
hard.
CDs or MP3s?
Vinyl please.
who stands out in your mind as interesting artists in the electronic world
today?
Drexciya.
What kind of hardware/software do you use to make you music?
Analogue keyboards, Kurzweil sampler, mixer, effects, microphone, 8 track tape
recorder, guitar and bass guitar.
How did u and RePHLeX hook up?
Put my phone number on the Shiver stuff and Grant rang me up from Rephlex to
offer encouragement. I was a very big fan of Rephlex and asked him to put out
a record. We talked, it took time...
When were u born?
I was born in 1972.
what possessed u to do a remix to cats on mars?
They asked me and offered me money. I like remixing stuff with vocals.
Whats ur favorite track on any of ur albums?
My favourite DMX Krew track is too hard to choose, they all have to do with
different times in my life and moods and memories and shit.
what is it like werking with RePHLeX?
It's OK. You give them music and they release it. It's not like a proper record
label where everyone does drugs and talks about shifting units. They really
love music, and they are my mates. But sometimes things happen too s l o w l
y.
U mentioned in the interview
with Anne Laplantine that ur favourite track is a video game, what is it?
Which game?
I did? Doesn't make any sense to me. I like Pac Man and Bubble Bobble and sometimes
Burger Time. Only Burger Time has music tho', and it's not very good. The old
C64 used to have some good music on it.
What are you interested in? Tell me something about it.
Um..... music. I've got a bit of a one track mind. All kinds of music. Making
music and listening to it.
what was ur favourite TV show as a kid? if not TV show, what did u do to
pass the time as a kid? tell me what u like about it so much?
Hmmm... I've always thought TV was a big waste of time. Can't remember anything
in particular. I guess any music show. I used to like playing on the old C64
and making music on my Casio. Before the C64 I had a ZX81, that was the bomb.
